X-Files in the Horror Universe: “THE MONKEY”

12 Jul

Every Friday I will be posting here an excerpt from my book, the Horror Crossover Encyclopedia.  These excerpts will be entries from the book featuring some of my favorite series, often series you might not expect to find in a book about horror crossovers.

GALLERY “THE MONKEY” (SHORT STORY BY STEPHEN KING)

Release Date: November 1980 (Contemporary Setting)

Series: Stephen King Universe (the works of Stephen King)

Non-Horror Crosses: X-Files

The Story: Children find a cymbal-banging toy monkey that turns out to be cursed.

Notes: Arnette, Texas is mentioned, that is also seen in Desperation. It is also featured in the Stand, which takes place in a divergent timeline. Stephen King would later write an X-Files episode about another very similar case of a cursed toy. I take this as an implication of a connection. This brings X-Files into the Horror Universe. Though the X-Files has episodes of a horror theme, I consider it a science fiction series, and so should I ever write and publish a Sci-Fi Crossover Encyclopedia (like maybe coming in 2018), the X-Files will get its fair share of representation. The Monkey is one of many King stories reprinted in the Skeleton Crew, but this story is greatly revised in Skeleton Crew.
