Godzilla in the Horror Universe: GODZILLA

12 Jun

Every Friday I will be posting here an excerpt from my book, the Horror Crossover Encyclopedia.  These excerpts will be entries from the book featuring some of my favorite series, often series you might not expect to find in a book about horror crossovers.

Release Date: November 3, 1954 (Contemporary Setting)

Series: Godzilla

The Story: Atomic testing in the pacific raises a monster who terrorizes Tokyo.

Notes: The Japanese name for the creature is Gojira. Godzilla is the Americanized version. The U.S. adaption of this film added some American elements, but for Horror Universe purposes both are the same event. Like with the War of the Worlds and King Kong, the events of this film must have been minimized by world governments and secret organizations after the fact. This Godzilla is killed at the end of the movie, and the first sequel makes it clear that the Godzilla of that film must be another of the same species. Popular culture refers to the giant monsters of Japanese movies as Kaiju. Godzilla and other Kaiju have had frequent crossovers. Only some of those will be included here and that is mainly due to my confusion regarding continuity. At several points, Godzilla and the other monsters get rebooted, and sometimes those series also veer off into modern day settings that have become far more scientifically advanced than in the real world, and with a new world government and public knowledge of Kaiju. For Horror Universe purposes, if it’s brought up in this book, it’s in the Horror Universe, or, if noted, the Horror Multiverse as a divergent timeline. If its not in this book, that doesn’t necessarily include or exclude it. In fact, all versions of Godzilla and his monster pals should be automatically considered as at least part of the Horror Multiverse as a divergent timeline. It’s only whether it fits in the main timeline that is in question. This film is followed by Godzilla Raids Again, Mothra, King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Mothra, Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster, Invasion of Astro-Monster, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla’s Revenge, Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster, Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Terror of Mechagodzilla, Godzilla 1985: the Legend is Reborn, Godzilla vs. Biollante, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Godzilla and Mothra: the Battle for Earth, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla, Godzilla vs. Destroyah, Godzilla 2000, Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, Godzilla Mothra and King Ghidorah: All-Out Attack, Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla, Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., and Godzilla: Final Wars. This film was remade in 1998 and 2014. This film has been referenced and spoofed many times.
